Hanging With a House Mom

Have you ever wondered what it is like to work as a house mom at the University of Georgia? Today, Delta Phi Epsilon sisters Katelyn Gray and Kristen Nicolosi worked together to interview house mom MaryAnna to find out a little more about what her job entails!

How did you land the job of DphiE house mom?

"Honestly the job just kind of fell into my lap. My husband passed away a few years ago and I wanted something productive to do with my time."

What was your job prior to being a house mom?

"Before this I worked for the Air Force and managed housing areas there. I helped plan and make changes to the house."

What does your job entail?

"I spend a lot of time on the phone. I have to do things like contact maintenance and take care of food orders or shipments."

Do you have a relationship with any of the other house moms?

"Yes! We are all pretty close and actually have a group message. My best friend is the house mom at Chi Omega here."

Use three adjectives to describe your job.

"Educational, unpredictable, and (mostly) fun. It is just a great way to meet people and the girls are my favorite part. I love to have conversations with the house girls, it closes the gap in age."

So I know you got initiated as a sister in the Spring. Can you talk a little more about what that was like?

"I am pretty sure it was Chanel, the past President’s, idea. When I was in college, I was in the Phi Beta Kappa honor society, but never in a Panhellenic sorority. I didn’t even know that at this point I could join a sorority. I am really happy I had the opportunity. All of the in house girls led the ceremony and my kids and grandkids all came to watch. It was so beautiful. There was catering and everyone kind of did everything for me that day. I felt very honored and included in the sisterhood."
